What is GEO? Search optimization when the search engine is an AI
SEO is about a position in a list. GEO is about being the source the machine cites. Here is the difference and what it means for you.

In short
- GEO is about being named as a source inside an answer, not about ranking tenth.
- In AI search there is no first place, only how often you get cited.
- Your SEO foundation still pays off, but content structure and mentions elsewhere weigh more.
- You measure results in citations and share of answers, not in rankings.
- Start by checking whether the crawlers can reach your content at all.
GEO stands for generative engine optimization. It is the work of getting ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI answers to name your business when someone asks about what you sell.
The difference between SEO and GEO
In traditional search optimization you are competing for a position. You want to be at the top of page one and you measure results in rankings and clicks.
In AI search there is no position. The user gets one continuous answer with two or three sources in it. You are either in that answer or you are not. Success is measured by how often you get named, and by what is said about you.
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | A position in a list | A citation inside an answer |
| Measurement | Rankings and clicks | Frequency and share of answers |
| Content shape | A long page about the topic | A clear answer to a specific question |
| Trust | Links | Mentions, named authors, facts |
| Freshness | Matters | Matters a great deal |
Why this is real and not a fad
The overlap between what ranks at the top of Google and what the AI systems cite has fallen from around seventy percent to under twenty. A business sitting in first place on Google can therefore be invisible in ChatGPT, and the other way round.
The conversations are different too. A query put to an AI is on average several times longer than a Google search, often a whole sentence or paragraph with conditions attached. So you need content that answers specific, compound questions rather than single keywords.
What to do, in order
- Check that the crawlers can get in. Look at robots.txt and your hosting. Many security products block AI crawlers by default.
- Make sure the text is in the HTML and not loaded in with JavaScript after the fact.
- Write the answer first and the explanation second, with short paragraphs and clear subheadings.
- Set up schema so the machines know what you are.
- Add llms.txt and agents.md to the root of your site.
- Put a name and a title on your content.
- Update your most important pages every three months.
What GEO is not
This is not a new kind of trickery. There is no such thing as stuffing keywords for an AI. These systems are trained to find clear, fact rich sources and they see through empty content as fast as a reader does.
The good news is that the work that pays off in GEO also makes the site better for actual people. Clearer answers, better structure and real facts. It is rare for two things to line up this neatly.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to choose between SEO and GEO?
No. About seventy percent of the work is shared: an accessible site, clear structure and good content. GEO adds emphasis on answer shape, named authors and freshness.
How do I know whether it is working?
You ask the systems the same questions regularly and write down what they say. It is easy to do yourself, and we do it monthly for clients on the top tier of Vefrækt, our ongoing care plan.
Is this only for big companies?
Quite the opposite. In Icelandic there are few good answers out there in most fields, so a small business that writes clearly can become the source within months.
