Ask ChatGPT about your business: a ten minute test

A simple test any owner can run today, and what each answer tells you about where you stand.

In short

  • Four questions are enough to see where you stand in AI search.
  • Three possible outcomes: it does not know you, it knows you wrongly, or it names your competitors instead.
  • Write the answers down and repeat in a month. Now you are measuring.
  • Try it in both Icelandic and English, the answers are often different.
  • It costs nothing and takes ten minutes.

Before you buy anything called AI visibility, measure where you are yourself. This takes ten minutes and you need nothing but access to ChatGPT or a comparable system.

The four questions

  1. "What do you know about [company name]?"
  2. "Who would you recommend for [your service] in Iceland?"
  3. "What does [your service] cost in Iceland?"
  4. "What is the difference between [your company] and [a competitor]?"

Then run all four again in English. These systems pull from different sources depending on the language and the answers can be completely different.

What the answers mean

If the machine does not know you

Then you are not in the sources it draws on. This is the most common outcome for businesses in Iceland and it is fixable. Start by checking whether the crawlers can reach your site at all.

If it knows you but says something wrong

This is the dangerous outcome, because customers are getting wrong information from a source they trust. Usually the cause is out of date content on your own site, or old information on listing sites you do not control.

If it names your competitors and not you

Then they are doing something you are not. Usually that is content that answers questions, or mentions on sites the machine trusts.

Your customer is asking the machine whether you are a good bet. You want to know the answer before they do.

Turn it into a measurement

Make a simple document with the questions, the date and what the machine answered. Repeat in a month. Now you have a measurement instead of a feeling, and you can see whether what you are doing is working.

What to do next

If the result was bad, the order is this: let the crawlers in, make sure the text is in the HTML, fix the facts on your own site, set up schema and llms.txt, and then write one good article answering the question your customers ask most. That is exactly what this site is doing.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT not just one system among many?

It is, and you should try Gemini and Perplexity too. But ChatGPT is by far the most used and it gives you a good read on the overall picture.

Can you pay your way into the answers?

Not the way you can with ads. You get in by being a good source the systems trust, which is slower but also more durable.

Can you do this for us?

Yes. We measure it monthly, log how it moves and fix whatever is in the way. That is the top tier of Vefrækt, our ongoing care and visibility plan.
