Why nobody can find your new website for the first few weeks
This is normal, there is a reason for it, and there are two things you can do to shorten the wait.
In short
- Google has to find the site, read it and judge it. That takes weeks, not days.
- The first step is Google Search Console and a submitted sitemap.
- Searching for your company name is not a test. Use a site: search instead.
- A site nothing links to takes longer to be found.
- Six to twelve weeks is the normal wait for the first real ranking.
The site went live on Tuesday. On Thursday you search for your service and find nothing. This is not a fault. This is how it works.
What Google has to do
- Find the site. Google needs a reason to visit: a submitted sitemap, a link from somewhere, or verification in Search Console.
- Read it and add it to the index. For a new domain that usually takes anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.
- Judge it. Google knows nothing about a new site: no history, no data on whether people find what they came for. That assessment takes weeks.
Two things to do right now
1. Search Console
Register the site in Google Search Console, verify ownership and submit the sitemap. It takes fifteen minutes and it is not optional. It is also where you see whether any pages are running into trouble.
2. Get your first link
A site nobody links to is a house with no road to it. Google Business Profile, your social media pages, ja.is, the association for your trade, suppliers and partners. It does not need to be complicated, it just needs to exist.
Test it properly
Searching for the company name tells you very little, because Google may have another meaning for the same word. Type site:yourdomain.is into the search box instead. That shows you exactly which pages are in the index.
If nothing comes up, the site is not indexed yet. If some pages come up but not all of them, something is blocking part of the site, usually a setting in the content management system.
A realistic timeline

What if nothing happens after three months
- Check robots.txt and any noindex tags. Remarkably often the block put in place while the site was being built never got removed.
- Check whether your text is in the HTML or loaded in with JavaScript.
- Check whether you are competing for terms nobody searches for.
- Check whether the old site is still live and competing with the new one.
Frequently asked questions
Can I speed things up with ads?
Ads have no direct effect on ranking. They do bring in revenue while you wait, which is often the right call for the first few months.
I moved to a new domain and lost all my traffic.
Then the redirects from the old URLs to the new ones are probably missing. That is fixable and it should happen the same day.
Can I pay Google to index the site faster?
No. You can request indexing in Search Console, which is free, but there is no paid shortcut.
