What does a website cost in Iceland in 2026?
The real price ranges, what sits behind each one and how you tell whether a quote is fair. No hiding the ball.

In short
- A brochure site in Iceland today runs from around 150,000 kr up to a little over a million.
- An online store runs from around 350,000 kr up to several million.
- The gap comes down to three things: who does the work, how much is built from scratch and who supplies the content.
- Always budget for running costs too: domain, hosting and maintenance, 5,000 to 60,000 kr a month.
- A fixed price up front is always a better deal than an hourly rate, as long as the scope is clear.
The short answer: a brochure site for an Icelandic business costs between 150,000 and 1,200,000 kr today, and an online store between 350,000 and a little over 2,500,000 kr. That is a wide range, which is exactly why this article exists.
The price is not set by how many pages you have. It is set by three things: who does the work, how much is designed from scratch, and who supplies the words and the pictures.
The price ranges as they actually are
| Type | Typical price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Do it yourself (Wix, Squarespace) | 0 to 60,000 kr plus subscription | A template, your time, your maintenance |
| Freelancer | 150,000 to 500,000 kr | A custom look, with ambition and follow up that vary |
| Small studio | 400,000 to 1,200,000 kr | Design, copy, images, process and accountability |
| Large agency | 1,200,000 to 5,000,000 kr | A team, discovery work, big systems, long timelines |
| Galdrasmiðjan | from 149,000 kr | A custom design, copy and images included, a draft in 48 hours |
What makes a website expensive
- The number of distinct layouts. Ten pages sharing one layout costs very little extra. Three pages with three different layouts costs a lot.
- Content. If you have neither copy nor photographs, somebody has to make them, and that is real work.
- Integrations. Booking systems, inventory, accounting and payment providers each add time.
- Languages. Every extra language adds to both the build and the content.
- Meetings. A website designed by committee always costs more. That is not a technical cost, it is a human one.
The running costs everyone forgets
A website is not a one time purchase. Budget for this monthly or yearly: a domain at ISNIC costs about 5,900 kr a year for a .is, hosting runs from nothing to a few thousand a month depending on scale, and maintenance in Iceland usually costs 10,000 to 60,000 kr a month depending on what is included.
A website with no maintenance is not free. It just ages until it has to be rebuilt. A three year old site nobody has touched costs you more in lost business than the care plan would have cost.
How to read a quote
Three questions decide whether a quote is fair.
- Is it a fixed price or an hourly rate? A fixed price puts the risk on the person building. An hourly rate puts it on you.
- What is included on the content side? If copy and images are not in there, the real price is higher than the quote says.
- Who owns the site afterwards? You should be handed the domain, the code and the content. If you cannot take your business elsewhere, you are in a trap.
What you should pay for what
A straightforward business that needs a credible presence, seven pages, a form and a map: 150,000 to 400,000 kr is fair. A business that plans to sell online with Icelandic payment providers: 350,000 to 900,000 kr. A business with a way of working that needs its own system: over a million, and at that point you should insist on discovery work and a prototype before you sign anything.
Why we cost less than most
We use AI as our design and engineering team and we handle direction and quality ourselves. Where a traditional agency puts four to six people and two hundred hours into a project, we finish it in a fraction of that time. That saving goes straight to you rather than into the overhead.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest route?
Building it yourself in Wix or Squarespace. The subscription is 2,000 to 5,000 kr a month. You pay with your own time, and the look is a template somebody else is using too.
Is more expensive always better?
No. Above a certain point you are paying for overhead, meetings and reports rather than for the website. Always ask how much of the price goes into building and how much into project management.
What if I only need a small fix?
Then you should not be buying a new website. Small changes are either included in a care plan or sold as one off jobs. That is cheaper for everyone.
